16th May, 2012: The State of Qatar presented the Government of Fiji today with a cheque for US$100,000 towards the Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund for assistance to the victims of the recent floods in Fiji’s Western Division.  The cheque was presented in New York to Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson, by Qatar’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Meshal Al-Thani.

Ambassador Al-Thani said that the donation followed on from the official visit to Fiji last month by Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Khaled Al Attiya.  During the Minister’s visit to Fiji he met with Fiji’s Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, and learnt of the plight of the flood victims.

Ambassador Thomson thanked the State of Qatar for its generous assistance and understanding.  He assured Ambassador Al-Thani that the funds would be immediately remitted to Fiji for their intended purpose and asked that special words of thanks be conveyed to Minister Al Attiya.

Following on from Minister Al Attiya’s April visit to Fiji, talks are progressing between the Governments of Qatar and Fiji on measures to develop closer cooperation and economic ties between the two countries.
