24th April, 2012: Cabinet has today approved that Fiji proceed with the formalising of diplomatic relations with all United Nations (UN) Member States.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.

Cabinet in 2012 had endorsed the formalisation of diplomatic relations with a specified list of 63 countries, and agreed that the signing of the appropriate Joint Communiqués be undertaken by Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (PRUN) in New York.

The Minister said that since this endorsement, Fiji’s PRUN has signed 37 Joint Communiqués to date, and has now formalized diplomatic relation with 114 of the 193 UN Member States.

Minister Kubuabola said that formalising diplomatic relations with all UN member – countries is in line with Fiji’s foreign policy philosophy and strategy of engaging in dialogue with all partners in the international community.

He also said that regardless of differences on specific issues or approaches, Fiji’s approach has always been and will remain that of engagement.
