10th April, 2012: The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs for Qatar, H.E. Dr. Khalid bin Mohamed Al-Attiyah is due to visit Fiji this week from 12th to 13th April 2012.
H.E. Dr. Al-Attiyah is here at the invitation of Minister for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.This week the Qatar Permanent Representative to the UN, H.E Sheikh Meshal Hamad Al-Thani has been visiting Fiji meeting the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Mrs. Saipora Mataikabara and other relevant Government Officials to firm up on the Ministers program.
Fiji and Qatar established diplomatic relations on 20 October 2010. Both Fiji and Qatar have contributed troops to UNIFIL Mission in Lebanon. Both countries are members of the NAM and G77. Both countries are also members of the Asia-Pacific Group in New York and have cooperated on a number of pertinent UN matters, including the election of Qatar's former PRUN to be the current President of the UN General Assembly, the elections for which took place in February 2011 during Fiji's Chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Group.
H.E. Dr. Al-Attiyah was appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in 2011. He was previously Qatar’s Minister of State for International Cooperation.
During his upcoming visit H.E. Dr. Al-Attiyah is due to meet with Senior Government Officials and those from the private sector as well to discuss areas of cooperation between the two countries.
