A Better Fiji through Excellence in Foreign Service
5th April, 2012, New York: Mr Luke Daunivalu, Counsellor at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations, has been selected as the AOSIS nominee to the UNFCCC’s Adaptation Committee. The Adaptation Committee is one of the newly established bodies under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The Adaption Committee’s mandate is to promote the implementation of enhanced climate change adaptation in a coherent manner under the Convention. The committee’s formation was one of the positive outcomes of the climate change conference, COP 17, that was held in Durban, South Africa in December last year.
Of the 16 members of the Committee, one seat is reserved for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The SIDS group at the UNFCCC is represented by the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS). AOSIS is an intergovernmental organization whose 43 members are the low-lying coastal and small island countries from the regions of the Pacific, Caribbean and AIMS (Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean & South China Sea). Climate change is the principal issue for AOSIS members.
Through its representatives, Fiji participates actively as a member of AOSIS. Mr Daunivalu’s election to the Adaptation Committee enhances Fiji’s active role in global climate change forums. Mr Daunivalu expects to strengthen and advance the interests of small island States in their efforts to manage the adverse impacts of climate change.
Mr Daunivalu is from Vione in Gau. He obtained his law degree from Bond University in Australia and a Masters in Public International Law from Leicester University in the United Kingdom. He joined the Fiji Government in 1996 and has served in the Ministry of Trade and Commerce, Ministry of Education, Fiji Police Force and the Solicitor General’s office. He was posted to the Fiji Mission to the United Nations in February 2010.
