A Better Fiji through Excellence in Foreign Service
16th March, 2012: Mr Hideo Kiji was commissioned as the Republic of Fiji’s Honorary Consul in Kanagawa on Thursday evening 15 March, 2012 at the Royal Park Hotel in Yokohama. The inaugural occasion was witnessed by about 300 invited guests comprising of members of the Diplomatic Corp, Business Communities and the Fiji community in Tokyo, Yokohama and its peripheries. The Commissioning ceremony eventuated only after relevant authorization from both the Fiji and Japanese governments were obtained. This is the second Honorary Consul that has been established in Japan as the first one was commissioned in Osaka in 2009. The establishment of this Honorary Consulate is in line with Fiji’s long standing policy in establishing and maintaining friendly relations with countries that have demonstrated genuine goodwill towards Fiji.
The apex of the program was the official handing over of the Consular Commission duly signed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of the Republic of Fiji, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.
While solemnizing the occasion, Fiji’s Ambassador to Japan His Excellency Mr Isikeli Mataitoga congratulated Mr Hideo Kiji and expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Fiji for accepting the appointment. Mr Mataitoga added that his vision when he assumed the appointment of Fiji’s Ambassador to Japan in November 2009 was to deepen all forms of bilateral relations between Fiji and Japan.
Part of the strategy was to identify Japanese business people who were well connected in their local context and who also has a diplomatic personality with a positive and gregarious outlook in life. It did not take long for him to identify Mr Hideo Kiji and with just only one meeting with him, His Excellency the Ambassador was convinced that he has found the right person to be Fiji’s Honorary Consul in Kanagawa. Fiji Embassy in Tokyo is aware of the importance and contribution of the Kanagawa Region to the economic development of Japan. Being perceived as one of Japan’s largest trading centre, Kanagawa is highly rated for offering very friendly investment facilities. It all began from a personal encounter between Ambassadorr Mataitoga, the Governor of the Kanagawa prefecture Mr Shigefumi Matsuzawa and representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industries in 2010.
From those initial contacts, it was quite evident that Fiji stands to gain much more from deepening its trade and investment promotion in Kanagawa.
It was for such reasons that the establishment of the Honorary Consulate office in the area was further pursued. Ambassador Mataitoga emphasized that similar set ups will be targeted in other regions of Japan in the near future.
