A Better Fiji through Excellence in Foreign Service
11th January, 2012: This week the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Mrs Saipora Mataikabara together with Fiji’s Representative to the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) Roving Ambassador Mrs Litia Mawi met with a seven-member team which is conducting an independent external review of the SPC over the next three months.
The team comprised Mr Jim Adams – former Vice President, East Asia and the Pacific Office of the World Bank, Mr Alan Morris (Australia), Mr Bruno Peaucellier (French Polynesia), Mr Peter Winder (New Zealand), Dr Colin Tukuitonga (Niue), Mrs Noumea Simi (Samoa), Dr Norman Barth (USA) and is supported by Ms Amber Davidson. The Team will consider SPC in the context of its broader role in regional development.
Fiji had played a central role in the discussions of the terms of reference for the review in the last meeting of the Committee of Representatives of Governments and Administrations (CRGA). Ambassador Mawi chaired the 41st meeting of the CRGA comprising senior government officials from 22 Pacific Island countries and territories as well as those from Australia, France, New Zealand and the United States. CRGA had gathered at the SPC’s headquarters in Noumea, New Caledonia, from 1 to 4 November, ahead of an SPC ministerial conference (the 7th Conference of the Pacific Community). The ministerial conference attended by Minister for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola met in Noumea from 7 and 8 November 2011 and approved the terms of reference for the review.
Fiji which joined SPC as a full member in 1971 hosts the largest regional office for SPC. More meetings between the Ministry, other Fiji Government agencies and the SPC Review Team are scheduled next week.
