A Better Fiji through Excellence in Foreign Service
27th January, 2012, Suva: A delegation from the Ministry of Education and Science from the Republic of Georgia handed over 200 Net Books to the Ministry of Education this morning. The delegation headed by Mr. Giorgi Gulua, Head of Information Technology and Statistical Analytical Department, and another two officials from the Georgian Ministry of Education and Science arrived in the country this morning from Hong Kong and attended the Handing Over ceremony at 11am at the Ministry of Education Headquarters in Suva.
In handing over the computers, Mr Gulua explained that Georgia has been undergoing Education Reforms in the last five years and they are happy to provide assistance to the Fiji Education sector but they hope to extend their assistance to Fiji into other new areas in the future.
In receiving the donation, the Permanent Secretary for Education, Dr Brij Lal highlighted that the Net Books have come at a crucial time when schools in Fiji are just opening for the 2012 academic year and this is a great incentive to our students and schools to be on par with this technology era. He added that the Fiji schools have limited access to these new educational training tools and Fiji Statistics show that only 5% of the population uses the internet.
Fiji established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Georgia in March 2010 and this donation of computers were first discussed and approved during the October 2011 visit of the Georgian Foreign Minister, Mr. Grigol Vashadze. The other assistance provided to Fiji from Georgia is on scholarships for Masters and Doctorate studies in health related disciplines.
The Georgian Officials will also handover the Net Books to the five secondary schools identified by the Ministry of Education next week before their return on Thursday 2nd February, 2012.
