A Better Fiji through Excellence in Foreign Service
9th January 2012, Suva:
Planning is underway for the visit to Fiji next month of the Russian Foreign Minister, Mr. Sergei Lavrov. The visit will be the first to Fiji by a Russian Foreign Minister. Minister Lavrov is scheduled to be in Fiji from 1st to 2nd February 2012.
Russia’s Ambassador to Fiji, based in Canberra Australia, H.E. Mr Vladimir Morozov called today on Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama and Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola to discuss the upcoming high level visit.
The visit follows the ground-breaking meeting in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on 22nd September 2011 between Foreign Minister Lavrov and Pacific Island leaders and ministers. Fiji’s Minister of Defense, Mr Joketani Cokanasiga, represented Fiji at that meeting. As an outcome of the New York meeting, Russia expressed its interest in cooperating with the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) in development areas including investment, minerals, energy, tourism, education and medicine.
Speaking after his meeting in Suva this morning with Ambassador Morozov, Minister Kubuabola said:
“We will continue to build on the discussions we had in New York last year on tackling the major global and regional challenges and further deepening our diplomatic relationship. We will work together for our mutual benefit."
Earlier last year, to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries Fiji appointed Fiji’s ambassador to Japan, H.E. Mr Isikeli Mataitoga as Fiji’s first ambassador to Russia.
