Fiji’s Ambassador to the United States of America (USA), Winston Thompson, has thanked USA officials for facilitating the release of a Fijian who was held in Iraq along with two American security contractors.

Mr Thompson communicated on behalf of the Fijian Government to United States representative, Peter King for assisting with the release of Kevin Fisher who was part of a group that were detained earlier last month by Iraqi Army Forces.

“On behalf of the Government and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Fiji and the family of Kevin Fisher, I express our profound gratitude for your successful intervention in obtaining the release of the three detained persons, and especially for Fijian citizen, Kevin Fisher,” Mr Thompson wrote.

In thanking the US government, Mr  Thompson highlighted the contribution made by Fijian men and women towards peacekeeping duties, not only in Iraq, but also in various conflict zones in the Middle East.

“Fiji has been well-represented over the years in the US-led Iraqi involvement and many of our nationals have remained in spite of heightened dangers. We are therefore, extremely grateful that you have intervened to free these three, one of whom is a Fijian.”
