Minister Luveni Discusses Development Cooperation with Indonesian Counterpart

Jakarta, Indonesia, 25th October 2011: The Minister for Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation of the Republic of Fiji, Dr Jiko Luveni met with her counterpart, Mrs Linda Amalia Sari, the Minister for Women Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia here in Jakarta, prior to Minister Jiko Luveni’s attendance for the ‘International Conference on Social Welfare Issues in the ASEAN Region’ from the 27th – 30th October 2011, in Jakarta.

In the meeting with her counterpart, the two Ministers discussed areas of common interest in Empowerment of Women and have agreed to establish a working relationship through information sharing and exchanges. The issues discussed include Government policies on Women Empowerment, Gender mainstreaming in Government Ministries, Household Economy, and Indonesia’s Task Force on Women and Children Trafficking.

The two Ministers have also agreed that the above issues will be facilitated by entering into a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries. They were grateful for the Development Cooperation Agreement that have been already signed by our two Foreign Ministers, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and his counterpart Dr Marty Natalegawa in May 2011 and that through a Memorandum of Understanding, it will cement our Government to Government relations with Indonesia and they look forward to the signing of the agreement.

Minister Jiko Luveni also met with the Minister of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Salim Segaf Al-Jufrie and they have agreed that a Memorandum of Understanding will pave the way forward for future co-operations between the two countries. Minister Jiko Luveni was grateful for the invitation extended to attend the Conference.

The Minister also visited a Center for Women Cooperatives in Depok, a local community outside Jakarta, organized by the Women’s Group in the area and acts as business incubator. The products produced from this center includes seaweed ice cream, seaweed juice and sweets , seaweed cocktail, all manufactured in a small center where the women can then produce and sell. The Minister is keen to follow this through the Memorandum of Understanding that will soon be signed.
Minister Jiko Luveni will also visit a Centre for Exhibition of the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small Medium Enterprises in Jakarta.
