Ministry Participates Successfully in Diplomatic Mini Olympics


1st October 2011, Suva: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation led by Permanent Secretary SaiporaMataikabara joined other diplomatic missions and regional and international organisations and participated successfully at this year’s Mini Olympics at Yat Sen Secondary School, Flagstaff, Suva on 1st October 2011.

The Fiji Mini Olympic was a successful event when most of the diplomatic corps and international organizations turned up at the Yat Sen Secondary school ground to display their sports and cultural talents.

The Fiji Mini Olympic Games is the premier annual sports/social event for the diplomatic corps and international organizations based in Fiji. It is organized to foster good relationships and mutual understanding between the diplomatic communities where families of the Diplomatic Corp mingle around by participating in various sports activities.

This year, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community hosted the Mini Olympic and activities organized included the sack race, three-legged race, egg and spoon race, dance entertainment, Ambassadors Challenge, netball, soccer, volleyball, tug-of-war and basket weaving competition. Diplomatic Missions take turn hosting the event.

The Foreign Affairs team came in third place at the three-legged race with USP taking the overall games trophy.

Organizations taking part in this year’s competition included the United Nations, EU, International Federation of the Red Cross Societies, SPC, Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, USP, Malaysian High Commission, Embassy of Indonesia, Embassy of Japan, Kiribati High Commission, SOPAC, New Zealand High Commission, Australian High Commission, Tuvalu High Commission, South Pacific Tourism Organisation, South African High Commission and the Embassy of the United States of America.

The Ministry will be organising next year’s Mini Olympics after being drawn in a draw after the event.
