22 September 2011, New York: A bilateral meeting was held between the Republics of Singapore and Fiji in the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York today. Representing Singapore was Mr K. Shanmugam, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Law, while Fiji was represented by Mr Joketani Cokanasiga, Minister of Defence.

Minister Cokanasiga expressed Fiji’s desire to work closely with ASEAN and in this regard reiterated Fiji’s request for Observer status at ASEAN. Minister Shanmugam welcomed Fiji’s greater attention to ASEAN and reported that the request for Observer status was being considered at Officials level along with other applications for ASEAN Observer status. The Ministers acknowledged the news that the recently opened Fiji Embassy in Jarkata would be cross-accredited to represent Fiji in Singapore. Fiji is currently represented in Singapore by cross-accreditation from the Fiji High Commission in Canberra.

Minister Cokanasiga thanked the Singaporean Government for the leadership it provides for small States at the United Nations by its forming and administering the Forum of Small States (FOSS). The Fiji Mission to the UN is an active member of FOSS. Minister Cokanasiga also thanked Singapore for the support it gave the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) in the historic nomenclature change this year of the UN’s Asian Group to the Asia-Pacific Group.

Minister Shanmugam requested that Fiji support Singapore’s candidature in the November elections for the Board of the International Maritime Organisation. He was assured of Fiji’s positive consideration of this candidature.

The Ministers welcomed the forthcoming meeting in Singapore between representatives of Air Pacific and Singapore Airlines on greater cooperation between the two airlines.

Minister Cokanasiga was accompanied to the meeting by Ambassador Peter Thomson of the Fiji Mission to the UN and Ms Namita Khatri of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
