Fiji-China Conduct Successful Bilateral Talks

7th September 2011, Suva: Fiji and the People's Republic of China concluded their first bilateral talks to be held in Suva this year on Monday 5th September 2011.

Leading the Fiji Delegation was the Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation the Honorable Filipe Bole and the delegation included the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Mr Solo Mara and other senior Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation officials.

Leading the Chinese Delegation was His Excellency Mr. CUI Tiankai Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China and the delegation included H.E. Mr. Huang Yong - Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Fiji; Ms. WU Xi - Deputy Director-General of the Department of North American and Oceania Affairs; Mr. Huang He, Councilor of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Fiji; Mr. LI Ming-Director of the Department of North American and Oceania Affairs; Ms. LIN Bin -Deputy Director of the Department of North American and Oceania Affairs; Mr. CHENG Lie -Secretary of Vice Minister Mr. CUI Tiankai; Mr. LIU Yang-Second Secretary of the Department of North American and Oceania Affairs; Ms. ZHANG Yu-Interpreter, Second Secretary of the Department of Translation and Interpretation; and Mr. SU Junjie - Third Secretary of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Fiji.

In welcoming the Chinese delegation Minister Bole highlighted the warm and friendly relations that China and Fiji have enjoyed since Fiji gained independence in 1970 and which has deepened over the years.

Minister Bole also reiterated Fiji's support for the One China policy.

Minister Bole expressed the Fiji Governments appreciation for the assistance Fiji has received from the People's Republic of China in the past and which continues to date. The assistance has contributed enormously to Fiji's economic development.

In his response His Excellency Mr. CUI Tiankai reiterated China's position in respecting Fiji's sovereignty in formulating home grown solutions for its political development.

The two Delegations then discussed areas of mutual cooperation between the two countries.
