Pretoria, 29 July 2011: Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama officially opened Fiji's new resident High Commission to the Republic of South Africa at a function held at the chancery of the High Commission in Pretoria this morning.

Prime Minister Bainimarama spoke of the similar histories of the two multiracial and multicultural countries as providing the basis for sharing of experiences. In this regard, the presence of a mission in Pretoria will provide a direct conduit not just to South Africa but to the wider region.

Prime Minister Bainimarama highlighted that the opening of Fiji's first resident mission on the African continent symbolizes the expansion of Fiji's foreign policy horizons into engagement with the wider international community. The mission in Pretoria will allow Fiji and South Africa to build on interaction in international organizations of which we are both members through enhanced bilateral engagement. This will allow us to appreciate differences and capitalize on diversity to the mutual benefits of our citizens.

The South African government was represented by Ambassador Francis Moloi, Chief Directorate of South East Asia and Oceania of South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation. Ambassador Moloi spoke of the importance of Fiji to South Africa as a pivotal country in the South Pacific. Indeed, Ambassador Moloi said that South Africa's only mission in the region is in Suva, Fiji. Now that Fiji has reciprocated in establishing a resident mission, said Ambassador Moloi, bilateral engagement for the mutual benefit of citizens of both countries will certainly be stepped up, and Fiji's mission in Pretoria will last into the future to serve Fiji's interests in South Africa.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Relations Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, and Fiji's Ambassador to the European Union His Excellency Peceli Vocea were present to witness the occasion. Fiji's first resident mission in Pretoria will have as its inaugural High Commissioner His Excellency High Commissioner-designate Ben Salacakau, and Mr. Sisalo Otealagi as First Secretary. The High Commission is located at 240 Eridanus St in Waterkloof Ridge, Pretoria.
