Concerns over Issuance of Australian Visa

June 09, 2011: Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola was formally advised this afternoon (09 June 2011) that Canberra has issued a visa for Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara to travel to Australia, where he will address a meeting in Queanbeyan, NSW on Saturday.

Minister Kubuabola expressed his disappointment that Australia had so quickly issued a visa to Ratu Tevita Mara on Tongan travel documents, rather than awaiting a response from Tonga to Fiji's extradition request.

By intervening in what was a bilateral issue under consideration, Australia has shown little regard for achieving a resolution to the matter. Australia's action in welcoming a fugitive from Fiji risks an escalation of tensions in Fiji-Australia relations, which Australia must take responsibility for.
