Salacakau Commissioned by Acting President

June 09 2011: Former school teacher and sports personality Ben Salacakau was commissioned as the first High Commissioner designate to the Republic of South Africa.

Acting President and chief justice Anthony Gates commissioned Mr Salacakau at Government House this morning.Justice Gates reminded Mr Salacakau on the challenges but said he hoped Mr Salacakau would give his best. “We know you are going to a place which is untouched and hope that with your capabilities you will do well in South Africa,” Justice Gates said.

Mr Salacakau said he was ready to take up the new challenge and hoped he would give his best and make every decision in the best interest of Fiji.“It is a clear page where I’m going but I hope that with my background in the teaching profession and the training that I have received at Foreign Affairs I believe I will be able to overcome all challenges,” Mr Salacakau said.

But he gave a hint on some areas which he would try and touch on while on his posting. “I hope to look at how we can mutually benefit in terms of medicines and doctors because South Africa is quite advanced in medicine which I hope to build on that,” Mr Salacakau said.

Another area he wants to concentrate on is sports. “South Africans are known for their rugby and we are going to be in Pretoria – the home of the Bulls. I hope to work closely with South African authorities,” said Mr Salacakau, who takes up his post next month.
