New York, USA, 31st May 2011: The Republic of Togo and the Republic of Fiji today formalized diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations in New York. The Permanent Representative of Togo to the United Nations, Ambassador Kodjo Menan and his Fiji counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations dated 31st May 2011. The communiqué affirms the desire of the Republics of Fiji and Togo to promote mutual understanding and strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation between their countries, guided by the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of international law. This promotion of understanding is to be based on principles of international peace and security, inviolability of borders, and non-interference in the internal affairs of States.
In today’s discussions, the two Ambassadors agreed to work together to advance the interests of their countries at the United Nations and to explore opportunities for beneficial exchanges between Fiji and Togo. The signing ceremony was attended by Counsellor Luke Daunivalu of the Fiji Mission and Counsellor Waké Yagninim of the Togo Mission.
