27th July 2012: : Fiji’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China Mr. Esala Teleni continues to build people to people links between Fiji and China when he recently addressed a language training course at Beijing International Chinese College (BICC).

Ambassador Teleni was recently invited to deliver a speech at the closing ceremony of the Chinese language training programme “Seminar on Practical Chinese for Government Officials from Latin American, Caribbean and South Pacific Countries” at BICC. Sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and BICC, the four (4) weeks course was attended by three (3) representatives from Fiji. 31 government officials in the fields of diplomatic, educational, cultural and maritime affairs came from 14 countries and international organizations (including Antigua, Barbuda, Papua New Guinea, Panama, Dominica, Fiji, Costa Rica, Peru, Niue, Samoa, Saint Lucia, Venezuela, Jamaica and the Secretariat of the Organization of American States). Focused on the theme “Introducing Chinese Language”, the training programme includes both lecture classes and familiarization field visits around China.

At the closing ceremony, Ambassador Teleni told participants from 14 countries that “learning the Chinese language is important in getting to understand the Chinese, its people and culture. Furthermore, it is a useful tool in getting to understand how to do business with the Chinese people.”

Meanwhile following successful talks in Suva this week between the Vice Governor of Zhejiang Province, China, Vice Governor Gong Zheng and the Minister for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, Vice Governor Gong Zheng has agreed to assist the Ministry for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation with scholarships for its officers to study Chinese Mandarin in China for 1-2 years. This assistance is in line with the Ministry’s plan to better equip Fiji diplomats so that they become effective representatives of Fiji.  In line with this program Ministry staff are currently receiving French language training at the Ministry from the Embassy of France and the Alliance française.
