Ambassador Mataitoga discusses diplomatic training with Korea

On 9 May 2011, Ambassador HE Mr. Mataitoga called on the Dean of Education & Training of the Institute of Foreign Affairs & National Security (IFA & NS), Seoul, Korea, Mr. Lee Sangkyu. The consultation was convened at the request of the Ambassador to discuss, understand and learn from the experience of the Republic of Korea in the selection, training and evaluation of diplomats in their Foreign Diplomatic Service.

IFA & NS is tasked by an Act of Parliament to undertake the education and training of new diplomats and the continuing education of Foreign Service officers. IFA & NS under its three (3) core functions: i) the training of diplomats; ii) conduct research and provide a think-tank on Korea’s Foreign Policy Objectives and iii) undertake period assessment of diplomats provides and extensive and comprehensive training and evaluation program for its diplomatic representation.

As Fiji embarks on a more formal approach in the area of selection and training of its future diplomats, the experience of countries such as Korea would be useful indeed. The Korean model ensures to effectively train newly recruited officials to obtain specialized knowledge required for expanding diplomatic capacities. A dedicated Foreign Service training program will develop specialised skills in this area with Diplomats having the capacity to play various roles in our Foreign Missions.

Fiji’s Ambassador to Japan HE Mr. Mataitoga has held similar consultations with the Director of Foreign Service Institute in Japan.
