Fiji establishes diplomatic relations with Angola


19th May 2011, New York, USA: The Republic of Angola and the Republic of Fiji today formalized diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Angola Mission to the United Nations in New York. The Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations, H.E. Mr Ismael Gaspar Martins and his Fiji counterpart, H.E. Mr Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations on 18th May 2011. The signing ceremony was attended by Counsellor Luke Daunivalu of the Fiji Mission and the diplomatic staff of the Angola Mission.

In formalizing diplomatic relations, Fiji and Angola have affirmed their desire to promote and strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation between their two countries and peoples on the basis of equality, mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, as well as non-interference in the internal affairs of each other.

In their discussion, the two Ambassadors agreed to explore and facilitate opportunities for mutual and beneficial exchanges between the two countries. In addition, they agreed to assist each other in areas of common interest at the United Nations, including matters pertaining to the Law of the Sea.
