Fiji and Congo Establish Diplomatic Relations

15/5/2010: The Republic of Congo and the Republic of Fiji formalised diplomatic relations at a ceremony in New York last week.

The Permanent Representatives to the United Nations of both countries, Raymond Balé of Congo and Peter Thomson of Fiji, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations.

In formalising diplomatic relations, Fiji and the Congo affirmed their desire to strengthen the bonds of friendship and co-operation between them in the political, economic and cultural fields.

The joint communiqué is based on the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The two ambassadors agreed to work together to support their respective countries’ interests at the United Nations, particularly in the context of the Group of 77 and the Non-Aligned Movement.
