Permanent Secretary Mara Meets Brazilian Counterpart

10th May 2011, Brasilia, Brazil: Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr Solo Mara, met in Brasilia today with his Brazilian counterpart, Secretary General of External Relations, Ambassador Ruy Nogueira, to progress discussions on the establishment of Fiji’s 13th diplomatic mission abroad, in the Federative Republic of Brazil.

In warmly applauding the decision by Fiji to establish its first Mission in South America, Ambassador Nogueira gave assurances of the reciprocal practice to establish a Brazilian Embassy in Fiji in the very near future and that Brazil accordingly looked forward to the exchange of land in both capitals for the building of our respective Missions. Ambassador Nogueira acknowledged the Fijian Government’s strategic move to expand relations with South America and voiced Brazil’s commitment to South-South cooperation in actively sharing with Fiji knowledge and best practices in the agricultural and manufacturing industries, particularly in sugar and ethanol production.

In addition to meetings on the establishment of the Fiji Embassy in Brasilia, Mr Mara will be meeting with the heads of the Brazilian Agency of Cooperation, Department of Trade Promotion, Brazilian Agricultural Research Organisation (EMBRAPA) and the Under Secretary General (Political Affairs) for Oceania.
