MINISTER AND PS RECEIVE NEW CYPRUS ENVOY

19th April 2011: Today the Minister for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation the Hon Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and his Permanent Secretary Mr. Solo Mara received the new High Commissioner Designate of the Republic of Cyprus to Fiji, His Excellency Mr. Yannis Iacovou. Fiji established Diplomatic relations with the Republic of Cyprus in 1978.

His Excellency Mr. Yannis Iacovou has worked for the Cyprus Foreign Ministry for 23 years serving at various Cypriot missions in India, Greece, Denmark, and United Kingdom and most recently was Minister Plenipotentiary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nicosia. Mr. Iacovou started with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus starting in 1987 and was the Ambassador for Cyprus in Libya from 2004 – 2006. He took over as High Commissioner of his country to Australia in 2008. He is based in Canberra and is also accredited to New Zealand, the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, the Kingdom of Tonga, the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and the Independent State of Samoa. Mr. Iacovou holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Masters in Diplomatic Studies

Mr. Iacovou was also briefed by the Permanent Secretary on the Government’s Strategic Framework for Change and the implementation of the Roadmap for Democracy and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development.
