This meeting was a follow up, to review implementation of commitments, made earlier   at the Heads of Mission Consultation held in Fiji from 15-18 February 2012. The regional consultation itself was an agreed outcome of the Fiji meeting.

In his opening remarks to the meeting, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation acknowledged the appropriateness of the theme of the regional consultation: ‘Punching Above Its weight- Widening Fiji’s Diplomatic Footprint in the Asia-Pacific region’ and stressed the importance of the work of Fiji’s Diplomatic Missions in the region and globally in ensuring Fiji’s socio-economic development and in continuing the  commitment of global engagement, under pillar 11 of the Charter.

The agenda of the meeting focused mainly on trade, investment and development assistance cooperation. In each of these areas the envoys gathered discussed the work program they are undertaking in each of their country of accreditation to increase Fiji’s market share for Fijian-Made goods and services. They also discussed and identified sector specific investment proposal for Fiji which are viable and also widening the scope of development assistance for Fiji which exists beyond government i.e. to look at non-governmental sources and private sector entities, which do provide such assistance.

An important aspect of the regional gathering is the peer support mechanism that was offered from some of the HOMs to their other peers who may need assistance in specific areas. The idea being to promote, working-hand-in-hand to build a common vision for our work program for Fiji in the Asia-Pacific region. The unity and feeling of support generated from the meeting, will be highly beneficial in the work of the Ambassadors and High Commissioners attending the consultation when they go back to their respective areas of operations.
