30th March: Next week Prime Minister Bainimarama is scheduled to officially open Fiji’s newest Embassy overseas in Jakarta, Indonesia. Fiji’s Ambassador to Indonesia is His Excellency Ratu Seremaia Tuinausori Cavuilati.
The diplomatic relation between Indonesia and Fiji was established in 1974 with the signing of an MoU by the Indonesian government and the Fijian High Commission in Wellington, New Zealand. The relation was to be at ambassadorial level and would be held concurrently with other territory.
The Indonesian Envoy for the Republic of Fiji Islands was held concurrently by the Indonesian Embassy in Wellington since 1975 until 22 August 2002 when Dr. Makarim Wibisono, the Director General of Asia, Pacific and Africa of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs inaugurated the new Indonesian embassy in Suva, Fiji.
In turn, the government of Fiji also appointed Adi Litia Samanunu Qalirea Talakuli Cakobau, the Fijian ambassador to Malaysia as its ambassador to Indonesia. On October 4, 2004, the newly appointed ambassador of Republic of the Fiji Islands delivered her official credentials to President Megawati Soekarnoputri.
Fiji’s has close and deep-rooted ties with Indonesia which was based on their shared spirit as developing countries, of being archipelagos and being part of the region. The fact is reflected by the smooth cooperation between the two nations in the UN and other international forums.
