21 August 2012, Pyongyang: Fiji’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, HE Mr. Esala Teleni presented his credential to the President of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, HE Mr. Kim Yong Nam, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang City, DPRK. The Fiji Mission in Beijing is officially accredited to DPRK.
In his opening remarks at a brief discussion after the presentation of credential, President Kim Yong Nam, warmly congratulates Ambassador Teleni on his new appointment and extends his deep appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Fiji for its commitment and vision in developing Fiji and DPRK bilateral relations to new heights. President Kim further informed Ambassador Teleni that Fiji is the first country in the Oceania/Pacific region to have its Ambassador to the DPRK – an indication of goodwill to strengthen bilateral relations with DPRK.
President Kim stressed at the meeting that DPRK is promoting relations of economic, social and political cooperation with different countries of the world under the ideals of independence, peace and friendship - the cornerstone of DPRK’s foreign policy.
He went on to highlight that DPRK has been closely following developments in Fiji, most notably its recent admittance as a member of the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) in 2011. As a long-standing member of NAM, DPRK strongly supports Fiji’s membership and is looking forward to collaborate with Fiji in realizing the principles and objectives of NAM. As DPRK ushered into a new era of rebuilding its economy through industrial revolution and reforms, President Kim mentioned that joint cooperation through increased high-level visits, dialogue and exchanges is inevitable for generating opportunities and strengthen bilateral relations between Fiji and DPRK.
President Kim concluded his remarks in conveying his best wishes to the Government and the People of the Republic of Fiji. He stressed that the occasion witnessed today (Tuesday, 21 August 2012) is a historic and significant one marking a new chapter in our two sovereign states history. It pioneers the path for development of our two great nation’s bilateral relations into the future.
In response, Ambassador Teleni extends his gratitude to the Government and people of the DPRK for accepting Fiji as a sovereign state, culminating in the presentation of his credential accrediting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to DPRK. He further acknowledges the support, hospitality and genuine friendship accorded to him and his team during his short visit to DPRK.
Ambassador Teleni also seized the opportunity to brief President Kim on Fiji’s commitment to its Look North Policy, Fiji’s membership of NAM, Government’s Roadmap to Democracy and to the upcoming General Election in 2014. He further highlighted that Fiji is pursuing a path of transforming its strategic international relationship based on the principles of respect for independency, sovereignty, non-interference, peace and partnership.
In his closing remarks, Ambassador Teleni assured President Kim that he is looking forward to set up the necessary platform to foster and build mutual cooperation and confidence between DPRK and Fiji.
Ambassador Teleni visited DPRK from 20 to 24 August 2012 and was accompanied by First Secretary, Mr. Josefa Tuima. Apart from the presentation of credential, Ambassador Teleni met with DPRK’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vice Minister for Trade, Chief of Protocol and the External Affairs Committee/DPRK Friendship Association in Pyongyang to explore potential areas for bilateral cooperation between Fiji and DPRK in future.
