Fiji Signs MOU with North Korea (DPRK)

30 August 2012: The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola today signed a Memorandum ofUnderstanding (MOU) with  his counterpart from North Korea, Mr. Park Ui Chun in the margins of the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Tehran, Iran.

The MOU provides a platform for development cooperation  on areas of mutual interests between the two countries. It will also explore ways in which the two countries will strengthen their bilateral relations in the various fields, including trade, politics and development.

After the signing, Minister Kubuabola congratulated Minister Park and conveyed that the Fijian Government looks forward to closer cooperation with North Korea now that the two countries have formalised the framework arrangement for development cooperation.

The signing of the MOU is another milestone for the Fijian Government in its endeavor to deepen relations with all members of the UN in full recognition of the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"Fiji is at an important juncture of its foreign relations and Government has achieved a lot in enhancing its bilateral and multilateral relations which has been acknowledged by the international community. We will treat all  countries as equals as provided for under international law and will remain open to advancing areas of cooperation with all countries based on our Look North Policy", Mr. Kubuabola said.

The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1975 and are both members of the UN and the Non-Aligned Movement.
