A Better Fiji through Excellence in Foreign Service
1st September 2012: Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has been accorded the ‘guest of government’ status by the government of the United Arab Emirates.
The decision to accord this status to the Prime Minister and his delegation was relayed this week to the Fijian government. Prime Minister Bainimarama is leading a delegation to the Emirates to open Fiji’s newest embassy in Abu Dhabi.
The Fiji delegation includes officials from Fiji’s Foreign Ministry, Fiji’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, Investment Fiji, and other support staff.
The opening of Fiji’s newest mission in the United Arab Emirates will position Fiji’s interests within the Gulf region and the Middle East.
Academic Robin Nair was this year announced as Fiji’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. An experienced diplomat, Ambassador Nair has been busy finalising logistics and arrangements to prepare for the embassy opening.
This week Ambassador Nair was received by the UAE’s chief of protocol and was provided with AED500,000 from the President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan as a gift to the Government of Fiji to assist in the opening of the Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
Fiji’s embassy will be located at Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi. This week Richard Foulds, property manager for Etihad Towers released a statement welcoming Fiji’s decision to open a mission at the Towers after France opened their mission there.
"It is a great honour to welcome the Embassy of The Republic of Fiji to our commercial tower at Etihad Towers, particularly given that it will be Fiji’s first occupational representation in the Middle East region – a significant moment for both Fiji and the UAE. They are another highly prestigious addition to our ever-growing commercial profile and to now have two Embassies within our development is testament to our premier commercial and residential offering and our close proximity to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs”.
