Fiji Day Celebrations – Western Australia

The Fiji High Commission attended Fiji Day Celebrations in Perth, Western Australia on Saturday, 13th October 2012. The celebration which was organised by the Fiji-Western Australia Association Inc. saw over 300 Fijian nationals and friends of Fiji gather to commemorate Fiji’s 42nd anniversary of independence. The celebration was also attended by Australian Liberal MP for Cowan(WA) Mr Luke Simpkins, Fijian AFL superstar Nic Naitanui and prominent Perth-based business community.

The Association also took the opportunity to fundraise to support the work of the Pacific Eye Institute through support for a team of surgeons who are to provide free eye surgery to over 90 people in Fiji. In thanking the Western Australia Fijian Community for commemorating Fiji Day, Second Secretary, Jonetani Tagivetaua also reiterated the Prime Minister’s message of reflection on what each Fijian could do to help build a better Fiji.

The High Commission also took the opportunity to hold a seminar on Sunday, 14th October 2012 to update Fijian nationals living in Western Australia on, Constitutional and Electoral Reform, Dual Citizenship and Consular Assistance. The seminar was also used to network and gather relevant information in preparation for the upcoming voter registration in Australia in early 2013.
