A Better Fiji through Excellence in Foreign Service
15th November 2012: Diplomatic Missions, Regional and International Organisations based in Suva will this Saturday 17th November engage in friendly sporting competition in their annual Mini Olympics.
Once a year Diplomatic Missions together with international and regional organisations based in Suva gather together for a family fun day called the Mini Olympics. The purpose of the event is to foster good relationships and mutual understanding in the diplomatic community in Fiji. Attached is a Fiji Times story on previous events.
The Mini Olympics comprises friendly competition by staff and families of Diplomatic Missions in such sports as sack race, three-legged race, egg and spoon race, mixed netball, soccer, volleyball, tug-of-war and basket weaving competition. Organization of the event is rotated amongst the Diplomatic Missions. This year Fiji through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation will be hosting the Mini Olympics on Saturday 17th November at the Suva Grammar School Grounds in Nasese from 9am to 4pm.
Funding for this event is met primarily from registration fees from participating Diplomatic Missions and sponsorship.
The event will kick off with an Ambassadors Challenge where Heads of Missions in participating organisations will compete in a surprise event.
Speaking about the event the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation and one of the organisers for the event Mrs Saipora Mataikabara said, “The games will have everyone enjoying time out from the office for a whole day with family, friends and colleagues. It is always an exciting time for the organisations to get away from the often hard realities of day to day work and practice sport diplomacy instead.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors that have made this event possible and for all the participating Missions. May this day be an enjoyable day for you and your families as you participate in the program for the day.”
