Prime Minister Bainimarama Congratulates Republic of Korea's Newly Elected President

22nd December 2012: Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has conveyed the nation’s well wishes to the new President Elect of the Republic of Korea, Her Excellency Madam Park Geun-hye.

In his congratulatory message to President Geun-hye on her recent election to the post of Presidency, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Fiji’s support towards working with the Republic of Korea.

"Your victory is not only historical but very significant as it illustrates the immense faith and belief of the people in you to provide leadership and guidance for the country and the region in the face of a world in turmoil and doubt.

The message of your people resonates well beyond your boarders and we here in Fiji do share with them as we wholeheartedly endorse your election and commit to working with you for the achievement of mutual endeavors regionally and internationally”.

The Prime Minister’s congratulatory message highlighted Fiji’s own commitment towards strengthening its relations with Korea.

“Your election also gives promise and hope to the marginalized and less developed within and beyond the Republic of Korea, those that have been seeking leadership committed to bring change and progress based on equality and respect. We all are reenergised to partner with the Republic of Korea and Asia in general to bring change and progress to a world that is slowly coming to terms with the shifting of global economic and strategic weight from west to east.

We have total faith that your election will only strengthen and deepen our friendly relations which we have enjoyed for more than forty years culminating with the opening in Seoul early this year of Fiji’s permanent mission”.

President Geun-hye is the first female President for the Republic of Korea and is the daughter of Korea’s former President Park Chung-hee.
