Fijian nationals safe from Solomon Islands tsunami

7 February 2013: All Fijian nationals are safe from the Tsunami that struck the Solomon Islands yesterday.

Honorary Consul of Fiji to the Solomons, Mr. Atueta Balekana confirms that so far he has received no report of any Fijian affected from yesterday’s Tsunami.

Yesterday’s earthquake and Tsunami occurred in the far South Eastern Solomons near the island of Nendo in the Santu Cruz group of islands in the Temotu province. Villages affected were on Nendo Island, on which Lata airport is also located.

 Reports so far indicate 6 deaths with estimated 3000 people displaced.

The Temotu province is isolated and it may take some days yet before the real extent of devastation and deaths will be confirmed.
