A Better Fiji through Excellence in Foreign Service
April 3, 2013: In a bid to further consolidate links between Fiji and Cuba the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola is in Cuba on the invitation of his Cuban counterpart, His Excellency, Mr. Rodrigo MalmiercaDíaz.
Fiji and Cuba relations span a decade with opportunities and interests gained in the education sector and efforts made to strengthen bilateralism and its potential in other sectors. These developments are derived from the close relation of friendship the Cuban Government says joins “our peoples and governments”.
In Cuba, Ratu Inoke will meet Fijian students studying medicine at the ELAM, Latin American School of Medicine.
About 19 students have been given scholarships to study medicine since 2010 although Cuban scholarships have been in existence since 2000.
During the meeting with students, Ratu Inoke will discuss emergency communication processes particularly during natural disasters. This issue was raised following the hospitalization of a student after a cyclone hit Cuba.
Also to be discussed with the Cuban Government is accreditation details of students who have completed their studies and have obtained the MBBS qualifications.
Ratu Inoke will be returning to Fiji on Wednesday the 10th of April
