A Better Fiji through Excellence in Foreign Service
22nd June, 2012: Resolutions on “The Question of New Caledonia” and “The Question of Tokelau” were approved by consensus at today’s meeting of the Special Committee on Decolonisation at the United Nations. The two resolutions were presented to the Special Committee (C24) by Ambassador Peter Thomson of Fiji.
In introducing the resolution on Tokelau, Ambassador Thomson thanked the Ulu-o-Tokelau, Aliki Faipule Kalolo, for journeying all the way from Tokelau to address the C24. He welcomed developments in Tokelau over the last year, and called for the UN agencies, New Zealand and the C24 to continue to work together to provide the necessary assistance in the interests of the people of Tokelau.
Presenting the New Caledonian resolution, Ambassador Thomson noted that he was doing so on behalf of the resolution’s two co-sponsors: Papua New Guinea and Fiji. He highlighted Fiji’s current chairmanship of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) and the role that MSG plays in supporting the Kanak people of New Caledonia in their efforts towards self-determination.
Ambassador Thomson brought the Special Committee’s attention to the MSG Ministerial Mission to New Caledonia, 2 -9 July, to be led by the MSG Chair, Prime Minister Bainimarama of Fiji. He noted that under an exchange of letters recently conducted between MSG and the United Nations, the findings of the MSG Ministerial Mission will be shared with the UN Secretariat to assist in the preparation of the UN’s working papers.
The two Pacific Island countries represented on the C24 are Papua New Guinea and Fiji.
