A Better Fiji through Excellence in Foreign Service
29 October, Suva: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Regional Representative, Mr Thomas Albrecht, today presented his credentials to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.
In receiving Mr Albrecht’s credentials, Minister Kubuabola welcomed him to Fiji as well as the important work of UNHCR. As a contracting State to the 1951 Refugee Convention, the Minister said that “Fiji is one of the few Pacific island countries that have enacted refugee-specific national laws that demonstrate Fiji’s commitment to finding solutions to the difficulties faced by refugees and asylum seekers.”
In their discussions, Minister Kubuabola informed the Regional Representative that as of January 2014, there are five refugees and nine asylum seekers residing in Fiji, a number that has the potential to increase. He acknowledged there is a need to find lasting solutions to the issues they face. He also expressed Fiji’s readiness to work alongside the UNHCR to address the challenges faced and plight of refugees and asylum seekers.
The UNHCR Regional Representative is based in Canberra, Australia and has oversight for UNHCR’s activities in the Pacific region.
