Ambassador Thomson hands over presidency role

Jan 8, 2015- A ceremonial meeting was held at the United Nations  to mark the handover of the Presidency of the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board from Fiji’s Ambassador Peter Thomson to Ambassador Fernando Carrera of Guatemala.

In his closing remarks, Ambassador Thomson said it had been a great privilege to lead the board during the critical preparations for the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

He said he was confident that UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS were fit for purpose for the great development challenges looming ahead.

The board president serves for a one-year term and presides over the three UN entities with a combined annual expenditure of over US$7 billion.

The 36-member UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board is made up of UN Member States and is mandated by the UN General Assembly to provide inter-governmental support to and overall supervision of the activities of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

Ambassador Carrera currently holds the office of Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the UN in New York, prior to which he served as his country’s Minister for Foreign Affairs.
