Fiji’s newly appointed Ambassador to the UAE, Kamlesh Prakash this week presented his credentials to the International Renewable Energy Agency Director-General Adnan Amin, at the Agency’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, the permanent seat of IRENA. This accreditation as the new Permanent Representative to IRENA will ensure Fiji’s constant involvement in the activities of the lead Agency mandated to support member states in their transition to a sustainable renewable energy. Ambassador Prakash extended his congratulations to Director-General Amin on the attainment of IRENA’s fifth anniversary as an established inter-governmental organization. Ambassador Prakash also expressed his desire to work closely with the Agency in promoting and advancing the use of renewable energy in the pursuit of sustainable development and energy security and its access in all areas especially in the rural, outer and maritime areas of Fiji and the Pacific Small Islands Developing States. He added that climate change was real as demonstrated by recent extreme weather events like Cyclone Winston and the floods experienced in the past week, which brought about severe destruction and loss of lives and its impact on peoples livelihoods, agriculture, infrastructure, and the economy as a whole has been overwhelming. Fiji currently serves on the 21 member IRENA Council, as the representative from the Pacific Islands region and will serve out its two year term this May. With IRENA’s establishment in 2011, its membership has grown to 146 states with another 30 in the process of becoming members and its activities manifested in 90 countries around the globe.
