Fiji’s Roving Ambassador to the Pacific Island Countries and Territories, Mr. William Toganivalu, presented his Letter of Credentials as Fiji’s non-resident High Commissioner to Nauru, to the President of the Republic of Nauru, His Excellency David Adeang.
Ambassador Toganivalu was formally welcomed with a traditional Guard of Honour by the Nauru Police Force.
During the meeting, Ambassador Toganivalu thanked President Adeang for the warm welcome and also acknowledged the longstanding cooperation and friendship between Fiji-Nauru, rooted in the shared values, cultural ties, and commitment to regional development and prosperity.
President Adeang reaffirmed Nauru’s commitment to further deepen the bilateral relations with Fiji and to collaboratively address the challenges and opportunities in the Pacific region.
On the same note, President Adeang recalled his recent meeting with Fiji’s Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, in June, where he reiterated Nauru’s support for the Ocean of Peace initiative, aimed at transforming the Pacific into a zone of peace and stability.
Following the presentation of his credentials, Ambassador Toganivalu paid his courtesy calls to the Nauru Government Ministers, as follows:
Hon. Lionel Rouwen Aingimea, Former President and the current Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Justice and Boarder Control (Immigration); Hon. Charmaine Scotty, Minister of Health and Medical Services; Hon. Reagan Winson Aliklik, Minister of Transport (Aviation); Ms. Darrina Kun, Secretary of Education.
Ambassador Toganivalu was traditionally welcomed by the Fijian community in Nauru before a Talanoa session. The Fijian nationals were grateful for the opportunity to seek information on immigration services, and work contracts, and other issues of interest to them.
Additionally, Ambassador Toganivalu spoke on the innovative measures taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Fiji to enhance engagements with the Fijian diaspora, in particular the recently revamped website featuring a portal for diaspora members to register their contact details.
This innovation, he said will not only improve the Ministry’s response during times of crisis but also assist the Fiji Missions abroad, in the collation of data on the Fijian diaspora.
Ambassador Toganivalu also conveyed profound gratitude for the Fijian diaspora’s valuable contributions to Nauru’s progress and to Fiji’s economy through remittances, while emphasising the importance of preserving cultural heritage and maintaining strong connections to their homeland.
