The Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pacific Office in Fiji, Ms. Munkhtuya Altangerel in a meeting today with the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua, provided an update on UNDP’s support for Fiji’s development priorities.
It was an opportunity to discuss cooperation ahead of the upcoming visit to Fiji by the UNDP’s Assistant Secretary General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Kanni Wignaraja.
Hon. Qereqeretabua acknowledged the work undertaken by UNDP to advance 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development through initiatives aimed at improving livelihood of the communities in Fiji. She also welcomed UNDP’s commitment to elevate cooperation through provision of technical and funding support in key areas of development.
UNDP has embarked on initiatives to support Fiji in economic diversification, climate financing, innovative funding for renewable energy, empowerment of women and youths, social cohesion, rural electrification, coral reefs and environmental justice, to mention a few.
UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Altangerel expressed her gratitude to the Government of Fiji ahead of UNDP’s Assistant Secretary General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific visiting the country this October. “We are grateful to the Government of Fiji for the support afforded to the visit by UNDP Assistant Secretary General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Kanni Wignaraja.
“From 10-14 October Ms. Wignaraja will visit coastal communities, meet with senior government officials, and discuss and reaffirm UNDP’s priorities and commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and equitable future for all,” Ms. Altangerel said.
UNDP appreciates the strong partnership with the People’s Coalition Government and reaffirms its commitment to support Fiji with its evolving needs.
The meeting highlighted that a change management process at the UNDP has created opportunities for more national and local staff to be employed at one of the UN’s largest organisation, serving Fiji and the region. UNDP’s commitment to Fiji is manifested through its Multi-Country Programme, which was officially endorsed by Government of Fiji, in February 2023.
The UNDP’s multi-country office is dedicated to providing comprehensive support to Fiji across three core priority areas: Peace, Prosperity, and Planet. UNDP’s support to Fiji under these three outcome areas is estimated to be USD $35 Million for the next three to five years.
