The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Office for the Pacific has reaffirmed commitment to support Fiji in the shared commitment for realization of economic, social and civic rights, inclusivity and human rights development.
This was conveyed during a meeting between the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua and Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Representative Ms Heike Alefsen. The discussions held today (20.10.23) looked at cooperation opportunities ahead of the UN High-Level event to be held in Geneva from 10 to 12 December 2023 and the OHCHR Pacific planned event at the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting to be held next month in the Cook Islands.
In her remarks, Hon. Qereqeretabua acknowledged Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for the important work undertaken in Fiji and also reaffirmed Government of Fiji’s commitment to further strengthen cooperation.
The Assistant Minister said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to work closely with OHCHR through initiatives such as Human Rights 75 initiative, to build enduring partnerships and advance freedom, equality and justice for all, while upholding the universal principles of democracy and good governance.
Ms Alefsen said the Human Rights 75 initiative is an opportunity for everyone and notably States to pledge commitment to concrete human rights action in the Pacific, such as changing policies, legislation, enhancing institutions and other steps toward strengthening human rights protection for people.
“It is an opportunity to hear and learn from Pacific governments, civil society and development partners about how we can best address current and future human rights challenges.
“We look forward to seeing leaders from the Pacific taking part in our global commemoration of the 75th anniversary at our High-Level event in Geneva on 11 and 12 December.
“This is an opportunity for States across the world to dialogue and present pledges and commitments for concrete change towards greater enjoyment of human rights. Pacific support for the fundamental human rights and principles of the UDHR can help to advance its promise of freedom, equality, and justice for all,” Ms. Alefsen continued.
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for the Human Rights – UN Human Rights exists to work for the protection of all human rights for all people, to help empower people to realize their rights.
