The launching of Fiji’s second Voluntary National Review (VNR) is a remarkable achievement for Fiji in its commitment to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In an event coinciding with the United Nations Day, the Government of Fiji in partnership with the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office (UNRCO) yesterday launched the Fiji’s second Voluntary National Review (VNR). In his remarks, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Hon. Biman Prasad expressed the appreciation of the People’s Coalition Government to all the stakeholders involved in the development of Fiji’s VNR 2023, recognizing their invaluable contributions. DPM Prasad commended all Fijians for their dedication and commitment to Fiji’s progress on the SDGs, and saying that advancing Fiji’s progress on the SDGs necessitates a united and concerted national effort.
United Nations Resident Coordinator in Fiji, Mr Dirk Wagener commended the Government of Fiji for the launch of the second VNR and for its efforts to enhance data access and availability which is crucial for accurately measuring progress towards the SDGs.
Mr. Wagener commended the steps taken by the Government of Fiji to advance the SDGs, and added that the United Nations stands fully committed to supporting Fiji in its journey towards SDGs through the new United Nations Pacific Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework and the Fiji Country Implementation Plans.
He further acknowledged the wide-ranging consultations conducted by Fiji with Civil Society Organization (CSO), development partners, private sector and academia.
A panel discussion was also held among senior government and UN officials and CSO representatives and academics. Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua while participating in the discussions elaborated that the second VNR is realistic, in that it highlighted both progress, challenges and opportunities in working together to overcome barriers to sustainable development.
Hon. Qereqeretabua said Fiji’s second VNR speaks to the importance that Fiji places on the SDG Agenda and reflects on our firm commitment to achieving sustainable development.
The Assistant Minister said the UN Development system must be able to support the regional priorities as outlined in the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
Reflecting on the key interventions she delivered at the Fiji 2nd VNR earlier this year at the High – Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York, Hon. Qereqeretabua said that Fiji has been able to deliver the second VNR through an inclusive approach by collaborating closely with CSO and Non-Government Organisations (NGOs).
