PM RABUKA MEETS WITH THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF ACP STATES (OACPS)

Brussels, 01 February 2024- The enduring partnership between the Pacific region and the European Union (EU) was celebrated at the Pacific Day event today, ahead of the 3rd EU-Indo Pacific Ministerial Forum.
While addressing those in attendance, the Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka acknowledged the efforts of Pacific Diplomatic Missions in Brussels and valued EU partners for convening the Pacific Day event.
The Prime Minister emphasized the joint commitment to strengthening ties, recognising shared values, and working towards a sustainable, prosperous, and peaceful future.
He highlighted the collective commitment to democracy, human rights, and sustainable development shared by the Blue Pacific and the EU, adding that collaboration between the two regions is vital.
Hon. Rabuka commended the EU for its steadfast support in critical areas such as climate change adaptation, renewable energy, and economic development.
The PM noted that the recent signing of the Samoa Agreement is a strong framework for Pacific-EU cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Prime Minister Rabuka, at the same time, stressed the need for resilience, economic diversification and proactive recovery plans to address gaps and prepare for future challenges.
Reaffirming his vision for the Blue Pacific as a Zone of Peace, the Head of the Peoples’ Coalition Government called on global leaders, including EU partners, to join in upholding principles that ensure the Pacific remains a beacon of stability and resilience.
In his concluding remarks, PM Rabuka called on all participants to recommit themselves to mutual respect, cooperation, and sustainable development, creating a future where the Pacific and the EU stand united in addressing global challenges and fostering inclusive economic growth.
The Pacific Day event was jointly organised by the Pacific Island Embassies in Brussels, the European External Action Services and the European Parliament. The event promotes closer partnerships, investments and ways to address common challenges within the EU and Pacific regions.
