The Government of Korea through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) will strengthen support for Fiji through projects in renewable energy, infrastructure, climate actions, health and education, training and capacity building initiatives aimed at empowering communities in Fiji.
As part of its new support for Fiji, the Korean Government aims to further support renewable energy projects for 2025 with anticipated assistance of USD 10 Million with proposed projects already designed for Fiji. KOICA will enhance provision of technical cooperation and volunteer program, with more training and scholarships opportunities to be offered to Fiji. Currently there are 20 KOICA volunteers serving as teachers, nurses and radiologists.
This was conveyed to the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dr Lesikimacuata Korovavala while receiving a farewell call from the Country Director of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Fiji Office, Mr. Kapchae Ra.
On behalf of the Government of Fiji, Dr. Korovavala thanked the outgoing Country Director of KOICA for his commitment and service to Fiji, notably in the implementation of KOICA projects and initiatives supporting Fiji.
He welcomed KOICA’s commitment to further amplify the engagements with Fiji in line with the national development priorities and with it the potential for expansion to the maritime provinces.
On the same note, Dr. Korovavala extended his best wishes to Mr. Kapchae Ra for his next role. In his response, Country Director for KOICA Fiji, highlighted the progress on KOICA’s 9 ongoing projects in Fiji that are focused on climate change, infrastructure, health, education and renewable energy.
This includes the solar power plant projects in Taveuni and Ovalau, the Rehabilitation Service Project worth USD 10 Million at the Twomey Hospital in Tamavua, and Health Professions Education and Research Capacity Building Project worth USD 9.8 Million at the Fiji National University.
Mr. Ra said KOICA remains steadfast in its commitment to work closely with the People’s Coalition Government in leading community-based programs tailored to assisting rural and remote communities with the aim of empowerment and raising quality of lives.
Mr. Ra further expressed his sincere appreciation to the Government and the people of Fiji for the support accorded to him during his term in Fiji.
He added that Fiji’s friendly culture and hospitality are part of the unforgettable experience and looks forward to visit Fiji again in the near future.
