Georgia aims to strengthen bilateral relations with Fiji through initiatives such as the provision of medical scholarships, and partnership in business, climate change, and sports diplomacy and people to people links.
These were among the key areas discussed during a meeting held between the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dr. Lesikimacuata Korovavala and the newly appointed non-resident Ambassador of Georgia to Fiji, His Excellency Mr. Beka Dvali.
In his remarks, Dr. Korovavala congratulated Ambassador Dvali on his diplomatic posting and reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to advance cooperation with Georgia.
He said Fiji is grateful to the Government of Georgia for its continued support that has assisted Fiji exemplify the full potential of the two countries’ diplomatic relations.
Further, Dr. Korovavala welcomed Georgia’s commitment to support Fiji through the provision of medical scholarships that will complement current efforts to improve national health services.
Other areas of potential cooperation include sports, in view of the increasing number of Fijian players represented in Georgian rugby teams and other sports, combatting transnational organized crime and related security areas among the key issues.
In his response, Ambassador Dvali thanked Dr. Korovavala for the opportunity to discuss result-oriented initiatives to further strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two countries. His visit to Fiji this week, reflects Georgia’s policy priority to deepen engagements with the Pacific region, with Fiji as its hub.
Ambassador Dvali said Georgia will work closely with Fiji at multilateral fora including the United Nations (UN) on issues of common interests ranging from climate change, womens’ rights, peace and security. The Georgian Mission seeks to collaborate with the Fiji High Commission in Australia through initiatives aimed at promoting socioeconomic development.
Ambassador Dvali said Georgia is renowned for digital innovations such as electronic governance that can transform public service deliveries, an area Fiji could benefit from.
