Fiji’s bilateral relationship with the Republic of Korea is expected to grow further with renewed commitments to our shared values, aspirations, dedication and resolute efforts.
This was conveyed during a courtesy call from the new Korean Ambassador to Fiji His Excellency, Mr Park Young-Kyu to Fijian Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama this afternoon.
In congratulating Ambassador Young-kyu on his new diplomatic role, Prime Minister Bainimarama said the relations between our two nations have been deeply enriched through our many forms of interaction and engagements which are characterised by our respect for each other’s sovereignty, mutual understanding and cooperation.
Prime Minister Bainimarama took the opportunity to convey the Fijian Government’s appreciation to the Government of Korea for its steadfast assistance and support towards the development of some of our essential sectors.
The Government of Korea has, over the years, extended its assistance to Fiji in a number of financing arrangements, including through the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). Korea has also provided other assistance which includes the provision of technical experts, technical training, educational and cultural exchange programs, which has tremendously assisted our people through the KOICA Office.
On the issue of COVID-19, the Prime Minister thanked Korea for its continued support towards our communities during these challenging and unprecedented times and the progress we have made so far in the containment of COVID-19 in Fiji.
He said our collective efforts in the conduct of multilateralism is now even more important in ensuring that we confront the challenges before us with solidarity, against the scourge of this pandemic and its impacts.
He added, Fiji truly appreciates the significant contribution and leadership that Korea continues to provide in championing our mutual interests globally.
In response, Ambassador Young-kyu thanked the Prime Minister and the Fijian people for the warm hospitality rendered to him and said that he looked forward to further enhancing Korea’s bilateral relations with Fiji.
