Fiji and India share close relations and are committed to strengthening their bilateral ties in all aspects of cooperation.
This message was conveyed at the commemoration of 72nd Republic Day of India held at the Suva Civic Centre.
The program organised by the Indian High Commission was attended by His Excellency, the President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote, Honourable Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama, Honourable Speaker of Parliament, His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament and the Diplomatic Corps.
Prime Minister Bainimarama in a congratulatory message to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi said that Fiji attaches great importance to the friendship between the two nations, guided by the shared values and aspirations based on trust, peace and solidarity.
Speaking at the occasion, the Acting High Commissioner of India to Fiji, Mr. Sukanta Charan Sahoo said that India and Fiji have traditionally enjoyed cordial relations on the strong foundation of historical and cultural heritage and India has proved to be a development partner of Fiji.
High Commissioner Sahoo said that India has firmly stood by Fiji during times of crisis and devastation caused by natural disasters, reflecting our deep-rooted friendly ties.
“India remains committed to extend full support to Fiji’s concerted and sustained efforts to restore the livelihoods of the affected communities and to build resilient infrastructure. Government of India also announced grant of USD 1 million for COVID response in Pacific Island Countries under the India UN Development Partnerships Funds.
“I also heartily congratulate the Government of Fiji for its commendable success in keeping Fiji covid contained. It is also a day to salute the frontline workers in Fiji. The Government of Fiji has proved to the world that the pandemic can be contained by sheer grit and strict implementation of COVID protocols.
“I would also like to congratulate Fiji on successful assumption of Presidency of the UN Human Rights Council,” High Commissioner Sahoo said.
