Permanent Secretary, Office of the Prime Minister and Acting Permanent Secretary Foreign Affairs, Yogesh Karan today received a courtesy call from the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Palaniswamy Subramanyan Karthigeyan.
Mr Karan who served as Fiji’s High Commissioner to India from 2011 to 2016, acknowledged the continued cooperation between the two nations.
He reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to advance partnerships with India, by seeking further opportunities with India through strengthened levels of cooperation based on the national priorities.
He congratulated High Commissioner Karthigeyan on his new diplomatic posting and wished him well in his tenure in Fiji.
In response, High Commissioner Karthigeyan said he looks forward to working closely with the Fijian Government and all other stakeholders to help realise the full potential of this important collaboration for the mutual benefit of the people of both the countries.
He said the historic visit of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, to Fiji in November 2014 was a major achievement in our bilateral relations and gave a huge impetus to build a modern multi-faceted partnership.
High Commissioner Karthigeyan said India is privileged to contribute to the socio-economic development of Fiji as a major development partner.
He elaborated that in the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic India had provided critical medical supplies and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to Fiji amid major disruption to supply chains around the world.
Later in March 2021, as part of the “Vaccine Maitri” initiative, India had also sent 100,000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID vaccines to the people of Fiji.
“It is heartening to note that the Indian made vaccines played a major role in the timely roll out of the National Vaccination programme. India will continue to stand with and support Fiji in all its national efforts to emerge stronger and more resilient from this difficult situation,” High Commissioner Karthigeyan said.
