As part of the ongoing capacity building initiatives within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Nazhat Shameem Khan, conducted a full day in-house Briefing on the work of the Fiji Mission in Geneva and its expectations for 2019. This tied in well in light of Fiji’s recent membership to the UN Human Rights Council and vice Presidency of the Human Rights Council Bureau. The briefing was held today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Suva.
In December last year, the Asia Pacific Group of States had endorsed Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan, as the Vice President of the Council from the 1st of January 2019, and has advised the Human Rights Council Secretariat accordingly.
The position will require chairing of a number of sessions at the Human Rights Council in 2019, including some sessions of the Universal Periodic Reviews of states under review, which means that Ambassador Khan will be a member of the Human Rights Council Bureau in 2019.
