Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in the margins of the UN High-level meeting on the Interlinkages of Water and Climate Action met with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Climate Summit 2019, Luis Alfonso de Alba in New York today.
Ambassador de Alba was informed by Prime Minister Bainimarama of Fiji’s commitment and support to the upcoming Climate Summit being convened by the United Nations Secretary-General on 23 September 2019.
In expressing Fiji’s support, Prime Minister Bainimarama stressed that Fiji is willing to work with countries that are committed, develop innovative ideas, build partnerships and that can take bold actions to boost ambition to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
De Alba was further assured that Fiji, as the Pacific Small Island Developing States Chair will engage actively with other Pacific Island countries to support the preparation of the Summit towards achieving a substantial outcome.
The UNSG will convene the Climate Summit at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to raise ambition, promote transformative changes and generate political momentum.
In reiterating Fiji’s support, Prime Minister Bainimarama reminded De Alba, that the stakes are high and the world is running out of time. Prime Minister Bainimarama added that the window for transformative action is fast closing and there is no more time for talk.
In closing, Prime Minister Bainimarama invited De Alba to join Secretary-General Guterres on his proposed visit to Fiji and the region in May and to also attend the 3rd Climate Action for Pacific Partnership (CAPP) from 29-30 of April.
