Fiji has reiterated her commitment to uphold the values of the Treaty of Peace that overlooks the peace mandate in the Sinai Peninsula.
This assurance was delivered to the head of the Multinational Forces Observers (MFO) by Fiji’s Minister for Defence, National Security and Foreign Affairs, Hon Inia Seruiratu on the anniversary of the signing of the peace treaty signed in March, 1946 between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the State of Israel.
In his letter to Ambassador Stephen Beecroft, Director General of the MFO, the Minister said Fiji’s contribution to the MFO mission reflected its overall peacekeeping objectives around the world.
“In performing it’s duties as a good global citizen, Fiji through the Republic of Fiji Military Forces has been participating in peacekeeping missions around the world for 40 years. Driven solely by the pursuit of peace, the Fijian soldiers have braved some of the most dangerous and volatile regions on earth” Minister Seruiratu said.
In congratulating the MFO, Minister Seruiratu highlighted Fiji’s own contribution in the Sinai peninsula and the role it has played in upholding peace there since it begun deploying troops there in 1982.
“Our men and women who served there formed close bonds of friendship with troops from other peacekeeping nations and the local citizens living there. Our troops have fond memories of serving in the Sinai and hold in high regard their role in enforcing and overseeing the successful objectives of the MFO mission in maintaining peace and stability in that region.”
“On this occasion, please allow me to convey on behalf of the people and Government of Fiji, our commitment to the MFO Mission and the desire to achieve long lasting peace in the Sinai.”
In response, Ambassador Beecroft thanked Minister Seruiratu for Fiji’s contribution to the MFO mission and the role they play in the Sinai peninsula.
“The role that Fiji’s forces play in Egypt and Israel is critical to the success of the organisation (MFO) and provides the two countries with the confidence they need. The MFO is extremely appreciative of Fiji’s contribution and sacrifice of Fijian troops and we thank them for their service”, Ambassador Beecroft said
